1. Strategic goals and directions
Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) has always kept a strong focus on research. FIT’s research topics fall in many areas of computing such as Applied Optimization, Data mining, Decision Support Systems, Computational Intelligence, Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Software Engineering and Network Security. Our aim is to maintain world-class research works and regular research collaborations with other universities & institutions.
2. Research Themes
2.1 Computational Intelligence & Applications in Decision Support Systems
Computational Intelligence (CI) has been an important force in computing and has been applied for solving a wide range of real-world problems. CI techniques are no longer limited with fuzzy computing, neural networks, or genetic algorithms. It includes any model that is based on adaptation processes such as artificial life, multi-agent systems, swarm intelligence, or evolutionary games. Our research topics:
1. Fundamental research in CI: genetic algorithms, stochastic optimization, neural networks, fuzzy computing, parallel genetic algorithms, and evolutionary algorithms for multi-objective optimization.
2. Applications in Decision support systems, mission planning, scheduling, and airport controlling/sequencing
3. Applications in image processing and pattern recognition
4. Applications in Software Engineering: software project scheduling, software testing.
2.2 Digital Image Processing
We have carried out fundamental research on image processing such as image enhancement, image formation, image display, image compression, and image analysis. In additional to that we have a strong focus on applications of image processing in the following areas:
1. Military
2. Robotics / computer vision
3. Human / computer interfaces: pattern recognition, voice processing, computer graphics
4. Image Compression.
5. Safety: Fire Detection
6. Games & Entertainment
7. Medical Image Processing
Our ultimate goal is to build intelligent systems that have capabilities of sensing and thinking.

Data mining is one of the hot topics in IT. We can consider data mining as a counterpart of Database Management. While database management focuses on storage technology, querying and managing current data, data mining is about discovering pattern or trends hidden in the data. Our research expertise falls in the following topics:
